What is Wireless LAN (WLAN)?

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is an IEEE 802.11 standard on wireless data transmission. It uses radio frequency to replace tradition network built on CAT5 or coaxial cabling.

Function and advantages

WLAN eliminates the problem of cablings and routine check-up on cables. This also saves costs on re-cabling during a business expansion or relocation.

Wireless Distribution System

Wireless Distribution System is like a bridging device for wireless network. A typical access point can only take the role of either send or receive. When building a large wireless network, or to cover a larger area, you will need more access points. WDS can be used to act as both sending and receiving. This adds flexibility when the coverage area is large. However, the channel used between access points must be the same. When access points increases, the number of available channels decreases. It may not be a good solution for schools or environment with many users.
